2024-09-10riscv: Disable preemption while handling PR_RISCV_CTX_SW_FENCEI_OFFCharlie Jenkins
The icache will be flushed in switch_to() if force_icache_flush is true, or in flush_icache_deferred() if icache_stale_mask is set. Between setting force_icache_flush to false and calculating the new icache_stale_mask, preemption needs to be disabled. There are two reasons for this: 1. If CPU migration happens between force_icache_flush = false, and the icache_stale_mask is set, an icache flush will not be emitted. 2. smp_processor_id() is used in set_icache_stale_mask() to mark the current CPU as not needing another flush since a flush will have happened either by userspace or by the kernel when performing the migration. smp_processor_id() is currently called twice with preemption enabled which causes a race condition. It allows icache_stale_mask to be populated with inconsistent CPU ids. Resolve these two issues by setting the icache_stale_mask before setting force_icache_flush to false, and using get_cpu()/put_cpu() to obtain the smp_processor_id(). Samuel Holland <samuel.holland@sifive.com> says: This series converts uniprocessor kernel builds to use the same TLB flushing code as SMP builds, to take advantage of batching and existing range- and ASID-based TLB flush optimizations. It optimizes out IPIs and SBI calls based on the online CPU count, which also covers the scenario where SMP was enabled at build time but only one CPU is present/online. A final optimization is to use single-ASID flushes wherever possible, to avoid unnecessary TLB misses for kernel mappings. This series has a semantic conflict with the AIA patches that are in linux-next due to the removal of the third parameter of riscv_ipi_set_virq_range(), which is called from imsic_ipi_domain_init() in drivers/irqchip/irq-riscv-imsic-early.c. The resolution is to remove the extra argument from the call site. 2024-04-29riscv: Use IPIs for remote cache/TLB flushes by defaultSamuel Holland
An IPI backend is always required in an SMP configuration, but an SBI implementation is not. For example, SBI will be unavailable when the kernel runs in M mode. For this reason, consider IPI delivery of cache and TLB flushes to be the base case, and any other implementation (such as the SBI remote fence extension) to be an optimization. Generally, if IPIs can be delivered without firmware assistance, they are assumed to be faster than SBI calls due to the SBI context switch overhead. However, when SBI is used as the IPI backend, then the context switch cost must be paid anyway, and performing the cache/TLB flush directly in the SBI implementation is more efficient than injecting an interrupt to S-mode. This is the only existing scenario where riscv_ipi_set_virq_range() is called with use_for_rfence set to false. sbi_ipi_init() already checks riscv_ipi_have_virq_range(), so it only calls riscv_ipi_set_virq_range() when no other IPI device is available. This allows moving the static key and dropping the use_for_rfence parameter. This decouples the static key from the irqchip driver probe order. Furthermore, the static branch only makes sense when CONFIG_RISCV_SBI is enabled. Optherwise, IPIs must be used. Add a fallback definition of riscv_use_sbi_for_rfence() which handles this case and removes the need to check CONFIG_RISCV_SBI elsewhere, such as in cacheflush.c. We used to emit a flush_icache_all() whenever a dirty executable mapping is set in the page table but we can instead call flush_icache_mm() which will only send IPIs to cores that currently run this mm and add a deferred icache flush to the others. The number of calls to sbi_remote_fence_i() (tested without IPI support): With a simple buildroot rootfs: * Before: ~5k * After : 4 (!) Tested on HW, the boot to login is ~4.5% faster. 2023-04-08RISC-V: Use IPIs for remote icache flush when possibleAnup Patel
If we have specialized interrupt controller (such as AIA IMSIC) which allows supervisor mode to directly inject IPIs without any assistance from M-mode or HS-mode then using such specialized interrupt controller, we can do remote icache flushe directly from supervisor mode instead of using the SBI RFENCE calls. This patch extends remote icache flush functions to use supervisor mode IPIs whenever direct supervisor mode IPIs.are supported by interrupt controller. 2023-02-09riscv: Fixup race condition on PG_dcache_clean in flush_icache_pteGuo Ren
In commit 588a513d3425 ("arm64: Fix race condition on PG_dcache_clean in __sync_icache_dcache()"), we found RISC-V has the same issue as the previous arm64. The previous implementation didn't guarantee the correct sequence of operations, which means flush_icache_all() hasn't been called when the PG_dcache_clean was set. That would cause a risk of page synchronization. Andrew Jones <ajones@ventanamicro.com> says: When a DT puts zicbom in the isa string, but does not provide a block size, ALT_CMO_OP() will attempt to do cache operations on address zero since the start address will be ANDed with zero. We can't simply BUG() in riscv_init_cbom_blocksize() when we fail to find a block size because the failure will happen before logging works, leaving users to scratch their heads as to why the boot hung. Instead, ensure Zicbom is disabled and output an error which will hopefully alert people that the DT needs to be fixed. 2022-10-21RISC-V: Fix compilation without RISCV_ISA_ZICBOMAndrew Jones
riscv_cbom_block_size and riscv_init_cbom_blocksize() should always be available and riscv_init_cbom_blocksize() should always be invoked, even when compiling without RISCV_ISA_ZICBOM enabled. This is because disabling RISCV_ISA_ZICBOM means "don't use zicbom instructions in the kernel" not "pretend there isn't zicbom, even when there is". When zicbom is available, whether the kernel enables its use with RISCV_ISA_ZICBOM or not, KVM will offer it to guests. Ensure we can build KVM and that the block size is initialized even when compiling without RISCV_ISA_ZICBOM. 2022-01-20RISC-V: Do not use cpumask data structure for hartid bitmapAtish Patra
Currently, SBI APIs accept a hartmask that is generated from struct cpumask. Cpumask data structure can hold upto NR_CPUs value. Thus, it is not the correct data structure for hartids as it can be higher than NR_CPUs for platforms with sparse or discontguous hartids. Remove all association between hartid mask and struct cpumask. Looking at the backtrace, the illegal instruction is encountered in this same function. However, patch_text_nosync, after patching the instructions, calls flush_icache_range. But looking at what happens in this function: flush_icache_range -> flush_icache_all -> sbi_remote_fence_i -> __sbi_rfence_v02 -> riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask The icache and dcache of the current cpu are never synchronized between the patching of riscv_cpuid_to_hartid_mask and calling this same function. So fix this by flushing the current cpu's icache before asking for the other cpus to do the same. The kernel runs in M-mode without using page tables, and thus can't run bare metal without help from additional firmware. Most of the patch is just stubbing out code not needed without page tables, but there is an interesting detail in the signals implementation: - The normal RISC-V syscall ABI only implements rt_sigreturn as VDSO entry point, but the ELF VDSO is not supported for nommu Linux. We instead copy the code to call the syscall onto the stack. 2019-11-13riscv: implement remote sfence.i using IPIsChristoph Hellwig
The RISC-V ISA only supports flushing the instruction cache for the local CPU core. Currently we always offload the remote TLB flushing to the SBI, which then issues an IPI under the hoods. But with M-mode we do not have an SBI so we have to do it ourselves. IPI to the other nodes using the existing kernel helpers instead if we have native clint support and thus can IPI directly from the kernel. Currently, flush_icache_all is macro-expanded into a SBI call, yet no asm/sbi.h is included in asm/cacheflush.h. This could be moved to mm/cacheflush.c instead (SBI call will dominate performance-wise and there is no worry to not have it inlined. Currently, flush_icache_mm stays in kernel/smp.c, which looks like a hack to prevent it from being compiled when CONFIG_SMP=n. It should also be in mm/cacheflush.c. 2017-11-30RISC-V: Flush I$ when making a dirty page executableAndrew Waterman
The RISC-V ISA allows for instruction caches that are not coherent WRT stores, even on a single hart. As a result, we need to explicitly flush the instruction cache whenever marking a dirty page as executable in order to preserve the correct system behavior. Local instruction caches aren't that scary (our implementations actually flush the cache, but RISC-V is defined to allow higher-performance implementations to exist), but RISC-V defines no way to perform an instruction cache shootdown. When explicitly asked to do so we can shoot down remote instruction caches via an IPI, but this is a bit on the slow side. Instead of requiring an IPI to all harts whenever marking a page as executable, we simply flush the currently running harts. In order to maintain correct behavior, we additionally mark every other hart as needing a deferred instruction cache which will be taken before anything runs on it.
