2025-02-21rtnetlink: Pack newlink() params into structXiao Liang
There are 4 net namespaces involved when creating links: - source netns - where the netlink socket resides, - target netns - where to put the device being created, - link netns - netns associated with the device (backend), - peer netns - netns of peer device. Currently, two nets are passed to newlink() callback - "src_net" parameter and "dev_net" (implicitly in net_device). They are set as follows, depending on netlink attributes in the request. +------------+-------------------+---------+---------+ | peer netns | IFLA_LINK_NETNSID | src_net | dev_net | +------------+-------------------+---------+---------+ | | absent | source | target | | absent +-------------------+---------+---------+ | | present | link | link | +------------+-------------------+---------+---------+ | | absent | peer | target | | present +-------------------+---------+---------+ | | present | peer | link | +------------+-------------------+---------+---------+ When IFLA_LINK_NETNSID is present, the device is created in link netns first and then moved to target netns. This has some side effects, including extra ifindex allocation, ifname validation and link events. These could be avoided if we create it in target netns from the beginning. On the other hand, the meaning of src_net parameter is ambiguous. It varies depending on how parameters are passed. It is the effective link (or peer netns) by design, but some drivers ignore it and use dev_net instead. To provide more netns context for drivers, this patch packs existing newlink() parameters, along with the source netns, link netns and peer netns, into a struct. The old "src_net" is renamed to "net" to avoid confusion with real source netns, and will be deprecated later. The use of src_net are converted to params->net trivially. 2025-02-21afs: Give an afs_server object a ref on the afs_cell object it points toDavid Howells
Give an afs_server object a ref on the afs_cell object it points to so that the cell doesn't get deleted before the server record. Whilst this is circular (cell -> vol -> server_list -> server -> cell), the ref only pins the memory, not the lifetime as that's controlled by the activity counter. When the volume's activity counter reaches 0, it detaches from the cell and discards its server list; when a cell's activity counter reaches 0, it discards its root volume. At that point, the circularity is cut. 2025-02-20bpf: Add BPF_SOCK_OPS_TSTAMP_SENDMSG_CB callbackJason Xing
This patch introduces a new callback in tcp_tx_timestamp() to correlate tcp_sendmsg timestamp with timestamps from other tx timestamping callbacks (e.g., SND/SW/ACK). Without this patch, BPF program wouldn't know which timestamps belong to which flow because of no socket lock protection. This new callback is inserted in tcp_tx_timestamp() to address this issue because tcp_tx_timestamp() still owns the same socket lock with tcp_sendmsg_locked() in the meanwhile tcp_tx_timestamp() initializes the timestamping related fields for the skb, especially tskey. The tskey is the bridge to do the correlation. For TCP, BPF program hooks the beginning of tcp_sendmsg_locked() and then stores the sendmsg timestamp at the bpf_sk_storage, correlating this timestamp with its tskey that are later used in other sending timestamping callbacks. 2025-02-20bpf: Add BPF_SOCK_OPS_TSTAMP_SND_HW_CB callbackJason Xing
Support hw SCM_TSTAMP_SND case for bpf timestamping. Add a new sock_ops callback, BPF_SOCK_OPS_TSTAMP_SND_HW_CB. This callback will occur at the same timestamping point as the user space's hardware SCM_TSTAMP_SND. The BPF program can use it to get the same SCM_TSTAMP_SND timestamp without modifying the user-space application. To avoid increasing the code complexity, replace SKBTX_HW_TSTAMP with SKBTX_HW_TSTAMP_NOBPF instead of changing numerous callers from driver side using SKBTX_HW_TSTAMP. The new definition of SKBTX_HW_TSTAMP means the combination tests of socket timestamping and bpf timestamping. After this patch, drivers can work under the bpf timestamping. Considering some drivers don't assign the skb with hardware timestamp, this patch does the assignment and then BPF program can acquire the hwstamp from skb directly. 2025-02-20bpf: Prevent unsafe access to the sock fields in the BPF timestamping callbackJason Xing
The subsequent patch will implement BPF TX timestamping. It will call the sockops BPF program without holding the sock lock. This breaks the current assumption that all sock ops programs will hold the sock lock. The sock's fields of the uapi's bpf_sock_ops requires this assumption. To address this, a new "u8 is_locked_tcp_sock;" field is added. This patch sets it in the current sock_ops callbacks. The "is_fullsock" test is then replaced by the "is_locked_tcp_sock" test during sock_ops_convert_ctx_access(). The new TX timestamping callbacks added in the subsequent patch will not have this set. This will prevent unsafe access from the new timestamping callbacks. Potentially, we could allow read-only access. However, this would require identifying which callback is read-safe-only and also requires additional BPF instruction rewrites in the covert_ctx. Since the BPF program can always read everything from a socket (e.g., by using bpf_core_cast), this patch keeps it simple and disables all read and write access to any socket fields through the bpf_sock_ops UAPI from the new TX timestamping callback. Moreover, note that some of the fields in bpf_sock_ops are specific to tcp_sock, and sock_ops currently only supports tcp_sock. In the future, UDP timestamping will be added, which will also break this assumption. The same idea used in this patch will be reused. Considering that the current sock_ops only supports tcp_sock, the variable is named is_locked_"tcp"_sock. 2025-02-20bpf: Prepare the sock_ops ctx and call bpf prog for TX timestampingJason Xing
This patch introduces a new bpf_skops_tx_timestamping() function that prepares the "struct bpf_sock_ops" ctx and then executes the sockops BPF program. The subsequent patch will utilize bpf_skops_tx_timestamping() at the existing TX timestamping kernel callbacks (__sk_tstamp_tx specifically) to call the sockops BPF program. 2025-02-20net: Add options as a flexible array to struct ip_tunnel_infoGal Pressman
Remove the hidden assumption that options are allocated at the end of the struct, and teach the compiler about them using a flexible array. With this, we can revert the unsafe_memcpy() call we have in tun_dst_unclone() [1], and resolve the false field-spanning write warning caused by the memcpy() in ip_tunnel_info_opts_set(). The layout of struct ip_tunnel_info remains the same with this patch. Before this patch, there was an implicit padding at the end of the struct, options would be written at 'info + 1' which is after the padding. This will remain the same as this patch explicitly aligns 'options'. The alignment is needed as the options are later casted to different structs, and might result in unaligned memory access. 2025-02-20fuse: don't truncate cached, mutated symlinkMiklos Szeredi
Fuse allows the value of a symlink to change and this property is exploited by some filesystems (e.g. CVMFS). It has been observed, that sometimes after changing the symlink contents, the value is truncated to the old size. This is caused by fuse_getattr() racing with fuse_reverse_inval_inode(). fuse_reverse_inval_inode() updates the fuse_inode's attr_version, which results in fuse_change_attributes() exiting before updating the cached attributes This is okay, as the cached attributes remain invalid and the next call to fuse_change_attributes() will likely update the inode with the correct values. The reason this causes problems is that cached symlinks will be returned through page_get_link(), which truncates the symlink to inode->i_size. This is correct for filesystems that don't mutate symlinks, but in this case it causes bad behavior. The solution is to just remove this truncation. This can cause a regression in a filesystem that relies on supplying a symlink larger than the file size, but this is unlikely. If that happens we'd need to make this behavior conditional. 2025-02-20Revert "net: skb: introduce and use a single page frag cache"Paolo Abeni
After the previous commit is finally safe to revert commit dbae2b062824 ("net: skb: introduce and use a single page frag cache"): do it here. The intended goal of such change was to counter a performance regression introduced by commit 3226b158e67c ("net: avoid 32 x truesize under-estimation for tiny skbs"). Unfortunately, the blamed commit introduces another regression for the virtio_net driver. Such a driver calls napi_alloc_skb() with a tiny size, so that the whole head frag could fit a 512-byte block. The single page frag cache uses a 1K fragment for such allocation, and the additional overhead, under small UDP packets flood, makes the page allocator a bottleneck. Thanks to commit bf9f1baa279f ("net: add dedicated kmem_cache for typical/small skb->head"), this revert does not re-introduce the original regression. Actually, in the relevant test on top of this revert, I measure a small but noticeable positive delta, just above noise level. The revert itself required some additional mangling due to recent updates in the affected code. 2025-02-20tcp: drop secpath at the same time as we currently drop dstSabrina Dubroca
Xiumei reported hitting the WARN in xfrm6_tunnel_net_exit while running tests that boil down to: - create a pair of netns - run a basic TCP test over ipcomp6 - delete the pair of netns The xfrm_state found on spi_byaddr was not deleted at the time we delete the netns, because we still have a reference on it. This lingering reference comes from a secpath (which holds a ref on the xfrm_state), which is still attached to an skb. This skb is not leaked, it ends up on sk_receive_queue and then gets defer-free'd by skb_attempt_defer_free. The problem happens when we defer freeing an skb (push it on one CPU's defer_list), and don't flush that list before the netns is deleted. In that case, we still have a reference on the xfrm_state that we don't expect at this point. We already drop the skb's dst in the TCP receive path when it's no longer needed, so let's also drop the secpath. At this point, tcp_filter has already called into the LSM hooks that may require the secpath, so it should not be needed anymore. However, in some of those places, the MPTCP extension has just been attached to the skb, so we cannot simply drop all extensions. 2025-02-19net: stmmac: "speed" passed to fix_mac_speed is an intRussell King (Oracle)
priv->plat->fix_mac_speed() is called from stmmac_mac_link_up(), which is passed the speed as an "int". However, fix_mac_speed() implicitly casts this to an unsigned int. Some platform glue code print this value using %u, others with %d. Some implicitly cast it back to an int, and others to u32. Good practice is to use one type and only one type to represent a value being passed around a driver. Switch all of these over to consistently use "int" when dealing with a speed passed from stmmac_mac_link_up(), even though the speed will always be positive. Initialize the ip cookie tos field when initializing the cookie, in ipcm_init_sk. The existing code inverts the standard pattern for initializing cookie fields. This field inverts that, setting the field to an illegal value and after cmsg parsing checking whether the value is still illegal and thus should be overridden. When a process reduces its number of threads or clears bits in its CPU affinity mask, the mm_cid allocation should eventually converge towards smaller values. However, the change introduced by: commit 7e019dcc470f ("sched: Improve cache locality of RSEQ concurrency IDs for intermittent workloads") adds a per-mm/CPU recent_cid which is never unset unless a thread migrates. This is a tradeoff between: A) Preserving cache locality after a transition from many threads to few threads, or after reducing the hamming weight of the allowed CPU mask. B) Making the mm_cid upper bounds wrt nr threads and allowed CPU mask easy to document and understand. C) Allowing applications to eventually react to mm_cid compaction after reduction of the nr threads or allowed CPU mask, making the tracking of mm_cid compaction easier by shrinking it back towards 0 or not. D) Making sure applications that periodically reduce and then increase again the nr threads or allowed CPU mask still benefit from good cache locality with mm_cid. Introduce the following changes: * After shrinking the number of threads or reducing the number of allowed CPUs, reduce the value of max_nr_cid so expansion of CID allocation will preserve cache locality if the number of threads or allowed CPUs increase again. * Only re-use a recent_cid if it is within the max_nr_cid upper bound, else find the first available CID.
