git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/arnd/asm-generic Pull compiler version requirement update from Arnd Bergmann: "Require gcc-8 and binutils-2.30 x86 already uses gcc-8 as the minimum version, this changes all other architectures to the same version. gcc-8 is used is Debian 10 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8, both of which are still supported, and binutils 2.30 is the oldest corresponding version on those. Ubuntu Pro 18.04 and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 both use gcc-7 as the system compiler but additionally include toolchains that remain supported. With the new minimum toolchain versions, a number of workarounds for older versions can be dropped, in particular on x86_64 and arm64. Importantly, the updated compiler version allows removing two of the five remaining gcc plugins, as support for sancov and structeak features is already included in modern compiler versions. I tried collecting the known changes that are possible based on the new toolchain version, but expect that more cleanups will be possible. Netfilter: - Rewrite the procfs conntrack table implementation, improving considerably the dump performance. A lot of user-space tools still use this interface. - Implement support for wildcard netdevice in netdev basechain and flowtables. - Integrate conntrack information into nft trace infrastructure. - Export set count and backend name to userspace, for better introspection. BPF: - BPF qdisc support: BPF-qdisc can be implemented with BPF struct_ops programs and can be controlled in similar way to traditional qdiscs using the "tc qdisc" command. - Refactor the UDP socket iterator, addressing long standing issues WRT duplicate hits or missed sockets. Protocols: - Improve TCP receive buffer auto-tuning and increase the default upper bound for the receive buffer; overall this improves the single flow maximum thoughput on 200Gbs link by over 60%. - Add AFS GSSAPI security class to AF_RXRPC; it provides transport security for connections to the AFS fileserver and VL server. - Improve TCP multipath routing, so that the sources address always matches the nexthop device. - Introduce SO_PASSRIGHTS for AF_UNIX, to allow disabling SCM_RIGHTS, and thus preventing DoS caused by passing around problematic FDs. - Retire DCCP socket. DCCP only receives updates for bugs, and major distros disable it by default. Its removal allows for better organisation of TCP fields to reduce the number of cache lines hit in the fast path. - Extend TCP drop-reason support to cover PAWS checks. Driver API: - Reorganize PTP ioctl flag support to require an explicit opt-in for the drivers, avoiding the problem of drivers not rejecting new unsupported flags. - Converted several device drivers to timestamping APIs. - Introduce per-PHY ethtool dump helpers, improving the support for dump operations targeting PHYs. Tests and tooling: - Add support for classic netlink in user space C codegen, so that ynl-c can now read, create and modify links, routes addresses and qdisc layer configuration. - Add ynl sub-types for binary attributes, allowing ynl-c to output known struct instead of raw binary data, clarifying the classic netlink output. - Extend MPTCP selftests to improve the code-coverage. - Add tests for XDP tail adjustment in AF_XDP. 2025-05-08lib/tests: randstruct: Add deep function pointer layout testKees Cook
The recent fix in commit c2ea09b193d2 ("randstruct: gcc-plugin: Remove bogus void member") has fixed another issue: it was not always detecting composite structures made only of function pointers and structures of function pointers. Add a test for this case, and break out the layout tests since this issue is actually a problem for Clang as well[1]. gcc-12 and higher support the -ftrivial-auto-var-init= flag, after gcc-8 is the minimum version, this is half of the supported ones, and the vast majority of the versions that users are actually likely to have, so it seems like a good time to stop having the fallback plugin implementation Older toolchains are still able to build kernels normally without this plugin, but won't be able to use variable initialization.. 2025-04-29vsprintf: Use %p4chR instead of %p4cn for reading data in reversed host orderingPetr Mladek
The generic FourCC format always prints the data using the big endian order. It is generic because it allows to read the data using a custom ordering. The current code uses "n" for reading data in the reverse host ordering. It makes the 4 variants [hnbl] consistent with the generic printing of IPv4 addresses. Unfortunately, it creates confusion on big endian systems. For example, it shows the data &(u32)0x67503030 as %p4cn 00Pg (0x30305067) But people expect that the ordering stays the same. The network ordering is a big-endian ordering. The problem is that the semantic is not the same. The modifiers affect the output ordering of IPv4 addresses while they affect the reading order in case of FourCC code. Avoid the confusion by replacing the "n" modifier with "hR", aka reverse host ordering. It is inspired by the existing %p[mM]R printf format. The byte initialization values used with -ftrivial-auto-var-init=pattern (CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_PATTERN=y) depends on the compiler, architecture, and byte position relative to struct member types. On i386 with Clang, this includes the 0xFF value, which means it looks like nothing changes between the leaf byte filling pass and the expected "stack wiping" pass of the stackinit test. Use the byte fill value of 0x99 instead, fixing the test for i386 Clang builds. 2025-03-04kunit/overflow: Fix DEFINE_FLEX tests for counted_byKees Cook
Unfortunately, __builtin_dynamic_object_size() does not take into account flexible array sizes, even when they are sized by __counted_by. As a result, the size tests for the flexible arrays need to be separated to get an accurate check of the compiler's behavior. While at it, fully test sizeof, __struct_size (bdos(..., 0)), and __member_size (bdos(..., 1)). I still think this is a compiler design issue, but there's not much to be done about it currently beyond adjusting these tests. 2024-10-24selftests: add new kallsyms selftestsLuis Chamberlain
We lack find_symbol() selftests, so add one. This let's us stress test improvements easily on find_symbol() or optimizations. It also inherently allows us to test the limits of kallsyms on Linux today. We test a pathalogical use case for kallsyms by introducing modules which are automatically written for us with a larger number of symbols. We have 4 kallsyms test modules: A: has KALLSYSMS_NUMSYMS exported symbols B: uses one of A's symbols C: adds KALLSYMS_SCALE_FACTOR * KALLSYSMS_NUMSYMS exported D: adds 2 * the symbols than C By using anything much larger than KALLSYSMS_NUMSYMS as 10,000 and KALLSYMS_SCALE_FACTOR of 8 we segfault today. So we're capped at around 160000 symbols somehow today. We can inpsect that issue at our leasure later, but for now the real value to this test is that this will easily allow us to test improvements on find_symbol(). We want to enable this test on allyesmodconfig builds so we can't use this combination, so instead just use a safe value for now and be informative on the Kconfig symbol documentation about where our thresholds are for testers. We default then to KALLSYSMS_NUMSYMS of just 100 and KALLSYMS_SCALE_FACTOR of 8. On x86_64 we can use perf, for other architectures we just use 'time' and allow for customizations. For example a future enhancements could be done for parisc to check for unaligned accesses which triggers a special special exception handler assembler code inside the kernel. This should also hopefully showcase how to start doing basic self module writing code, which may be more useful for more complex cases later in the future.
