They have been deprecated for half a year and nobody has complained. - The series "mm: further simplify VMA merge operation" from Lorenzo Stoakes implements numerous simplifications in this area. No runtime effects are anticipated. - The series "mm/madvise: remove redundant mmap_lock operations from process_madvise()" from SeongJae Park rationalizes the locking in the madvise() implementation. Performance gains of 20-25% were observed in one MADV_DONTNEED microbenchmark. - The series "Tiny cleanup and improvements about SWAP code" from Baoquan He contains a number of touchups to issues which Baoquan noticed when working on the swap code. - The series "mm: kmemleak: Usability improvements" from Catalin Marinas implements a couple of improvements to the kmemleak user-visible output. - The series "mm/damon/paddr: fix large folios access and schemes handling" from Usama Arif provides a couple of fixes for DAMON's handling of large folios. - The series "mm/damon/core: fix wrong and/or useless damos_walk() behaviors" from SeongJae Park fixes a few issues with the accuracy of kdamond's walking of DAMON regions. - The series "expose mapping wrprotect, fix fb_defio use" from Lorenzo Stoakes changes the interaction between framebuffer deferred-io and core MM. No functional changes are anticipated - this is preparatory work for the future removal of page structure fields. - The series "mm/damon: add support for hugepage_size DAMOS filter" from Usama Arif adds a DAMOS filter which permits the filtering by huge page sizes. - The series "mm: permit guard regions for file-backed/shmem mappings" from Lorenzo Stoakes extends the guard region feature from its present "anon mappings only" state. Our reasons for pulling it out were largely bogus and that change made the code more messy. Ryan did this in preparation for implementing lazy mmu mode for arm64 to optimize vmalloc. - The series "mm/page_alloc: Some clarifications for migratetype fallback" from Brendan Jackman reworks some commentary to make the code easier to follow. - The series "page_counter cleanup and size reduction" from Shakeel Butt cleans up the page_counter code and fixes a size increase which we accidentally added late last year. - The series "Add a command line option that enables control of how many threads should be used to allocate huge pages" from Thomas Prescher does that. It allows the careful operator to significantly reduce boot time by tuning the parallalization of huge page initialization. - The series "Fix calculations in trace_balance_dirty_pages() for cgwb" from Tang Yizhou fixes the tracing output from the dirty page balancing code. - The series "mm/damon: make allow filters after reject filters useful and intuitive" from SeongJae Park improves the handling of allow and reject filters. Behaviour is made more consistent and the documention is updated accordingly. - The series "Switch zswap to object read/write APIs" from Yosry Ahmed updates zswap to the new object read/write APIs and thus permits the removal of some legacy code from zpool and zsmalloc. - The series "Some trivial cleanups for shmem" from Baolin Wang does as it claims. - The series "fs/dax: Fix ZONE_DEVICE page reference counts" from Alistair Popple regularizes the weird ZONE_DEVICE page refcount handling in DAX, permittig the removal of a number of special-case checks. - The series "refactor mremap and fix bug" from Lorenzo Stoakes is a preparatoty refactoring and cleanup of the mremap() code. - The series "mm: MM owner tracking for large folios (!hugetlb) + CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT" from David Hildenbrand reworks the manner in which we determine whether a large folio is known to be mapped exclusively into a single MM. - The series "mm/damon: add sysfs dirs for managing DAMOS filters based on handling layers" from SeongJae Park adds a couple of new sysfs directories to ease the management of DAMON/DAMOS filters. - The series "arch, mm: reduce code duplication in mem_init()" from Mike Rapoport consolidates many per-arch implementations of mem_init() into code generic code, where that is practical. - The series "mm/damon/sysfs: commit parameters online via damon_call()" from SeongJae Park continues the cleaning up of sysfs access to DAMON internal data. - The series "mm: page_ext: Introduce new iteration API" from Luiz Capitulino reworks the page_ext initialization to fix a boot-time crash which was observed with an unusual combination of compile and cmdline options. - The series "Buddy allocator like (or non-uniform) folio split" from Zi Yan reworks the code to split a folio into smaller folios. 2025-03-17mm: stop maintaining the per-page mapcount of large folios ↵David Hildenbrand
(CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT) Everything is in place to stop using the per-page mapcounts in large folios: the mapcount of tail pages will always be logically 0 (-1 value), just like it currently is for hugetlb folios already, and the page mapcount of the head page is either 0 (-1 value) or contains a page type (e.g., hugetlb). Maintaining _nr_pages_mapped without per-page mapcounts is impossible, so that one also has to go with CONFIG_NO_PAGE_MAPCOUNT. There are two remaining implications: (1) Per-node, per-cgroup and per-lruvec stats of "NR_ANON_MAPPED" ("mapped anonymous memory") and "NR_FILE_MAPPED" ("mapped file memory"): As soon as any page of the folio is mapped -- folio_mapped() -- we now account the complete folio as mapped. Once the last page is unmapped -- !folio_mapped() -- we account the complete folio as unmapped. This implies that ... * "AnonPages" and "Mapped" in /proc/meminfo and /sys/devices/system/node/*/meminfo * cgroup v2: "anon" and "file_mapped" in "memory.stat" and "memory.numa_stat" * cgroup v1: "rss" and "mapped_file" in "memory.stat" and "memory.numa_stat ... can now appear higher than before. But note that these folios do consume that memory, simply not all pages are actually currently mapped. It's worth nothing that other accounting in the kernel (esp. cgroup charging on allocation) is not affected by this change. [why oh why is "anon" called "rss" in cgroup v1] (2) Detecting partial mappings Detecting whether anon THPs are partially mapped gets a bit more unreliable. As long as a single MM maps such a large folio ("exclusively mapped"), we can reliably detect it. Especially before fork() / after a short-lived child process quit, we will detect partial mappings reliably, which is the common case. In essence, if the average per-page mapcount in an anon THP is < 1, we know for sure that we have a partial mapping. However, as soon as multiple MMs are involved, we might miss detecting partial mappings: this might be relevant with long-lived child processes. If we have a fully-mapped anon folio before fork(), once our child processes and our parent all unmap (zap/COW) the same pages (but not the complete folio), we might not detect the partial mapping. However, once the child processes quit we would detect the partial mapping. How relevant this case is in practice remains to be seen. Swapout/migration will likely mitigate this. In the future, RMAP walkers could check for that for that case (e.g., when collecting access bits during reclaim) and simply flag them for deferred-splitting. 2024-11-06memcg-v1: fully deprecate move_charge_at_immigrateShakeel Butt
Patch series "memcg-v1: fully deprecate charge moving". The memcg v1's charge moving feature has been deprecated for almost 2 years and the kernel warns if someone try to use it. This warning has been backported to all stable kernel and there have not been any report of the warning or the request to support this feature anymore. Let's proceed to fully deprecate this feature. This patch (of 6): Proceed with the complete deprecation of memcg v1's charge moving feature. 2024-09-01memcg: initiate deprecation of pressure_levelShakeel Butt
The pressure_level in memcg v1 provides memory pressure notifications to the user space. At the moment it provides notifications for three levels of memory pressure i.e. low, medium and critical, which are defined based on internal memory reclaim implementation details. More specifically the ratio of scanned and reclaimed pages during a memory reclaim. However this is not robust as there are workloads with mostly unreclaimable user memory or kernel memory. For v2, the users can use PSI for memory pressure status of the system or the cgroup. Let's start the deprecation process for pressure_level and add warnings to gather the info on how the current users are using this interface and how they can be used to PSI. 2024-09-01memcg: initiate deprecation of oom_controlShakeel Butt
The oom_control provides functionality to disable memcg oom-killer, notifications on oom-kill and reading the stats regarding oom-kills. This interface was mainly introduced to provide functionality for userspace oom-killers. However it is not robust enough and only supports OOM handling in the page fault path. For v2, the users can use the combination of memory.events notifications, memory.high and PSI to provide userspace OOM-killing functionality. Actually LMKD in Android and OOMd in systemd and Meta infrastructure already use PSI in combination with other stats to implement userspace OOM-killing. Let's start the deprecation process for v1 and gather the info on how the current users are using this interface and work on providing a more robust functionality in v2. 2024-09-01memcg: initiate deprecation of v1 soft limitShakeel Butt
Memcg v1 provides soft limit functionality for the best effort memory sharing between multiple workloads on a system. It is usually triggered through kswapd and at the moment does not reclaim kernel memory. Memcg v2 provides more straightforward best effort (memory.low) and hard protection (memory.min) functionalities. Let's initiate the deprecation of soft limit from v1 and gather if v2 needs something more to move the existing v1 users to v2 regarding soft limit. For now add the warnings to collect the information on how the current users are using these features. Next we will work on providing better alternatives in v2 (if needed) and fully deprecate these features. 2024-05-26cgroup/pids: Separate semantics of pids.events related to pids.maxMichal Koutný
Currently, when pids.max limit is breached in the hierarchy, the event is counted and reported in the cgroup where the forking task resides. This decouples the limit and the notification caused by the limit making it hard to detect when the actual limit was effected. Redefine the pids.events:max as: the number of times the limit of the cgroup was hit. (Implementation differentiates also "forkfail" event but this is currently not exposed as it would better fit into pids.stat. It also differs from pids.events:max only when pids.max is configured on non-leaf cgroups.) Since it changes semantics of the original "max" event, introduce this change only in the v2 API of the controller and add a cgroup2 mount option to revert to the legacy behavior. 2023-09-29mm, memcg: reconsider kmem.limit_in_bytes deprecationMichal Hocko
This reverts commits 86327e8eb94c ("memcg: drop kmem.limit_in_bytes") and partially reverts 58056f77502f ("memcg, kmem: further deprecate kmem.limit_in_bytes") which have incrementally removed support for the kernel memory accounting hard limit. Unfortunately it has turned out that there is still userspace depending on the existence of memory.kmem.limit_in_bytes [1]. The underlying functionality is not really required but the non-existent file just confuses the userspace which fails in the result. The patch to fix this on the userspace side has been submitted but it is hard to predict how it will propagate through the maze of 3rd party consumers of the software. Now, reverting alone 86327e8eb94c is not an option because there is another set of userspace which cannot cope with ENOTSUPP returned when writing to the file. Therefore we have to go and revisit 58056f77502f as well. There are two ways to go ahead. Either we give up on the deprecation and fully revert 58056f77502f as well or we can keep kmem.limit_in_bytes but make the write a noop and warn about the fact. This should work for both known breaking workloads which depend on the existence but do not depend on the hard limit enforcement. Note to backporters to stable trees. a8c49af3be5f ("memcg: add per-memcg total kernel memory stat") introduced in 4.18 has added memcg_account_kmem so the accounting is not done by obj_cgroup_charge_pages directly for v1 anymore. Prior kernels need to add it explicitly (thanks to Johannes for pointing this out). 2023-08-18memcg: drop kmem.limit_in_bytesMichal Hocko
kmem.limit_in_bytes (v1 way to limit kernel memory usage) has been deprecated since 58056f77502f ("memcg, kmem: further deprecate kmem.limit_in_bytes") merged in 5.16. We haven't heard about any serious users since then but it seems that the mere presence of the file is causing more harm thatn good. We (SUSE) have had several bug reports from customers where Docker based containers started to fail because a write to kmem.limit_in_bytes has failed. This was unexpected because runc code only expects ENOENT (kmem disabled) or EBUSY (tasks already running within cgroup). So a new error code was unexpected and the whole container startup failed. This has been later addressed by https://github.com/opencontainers/runc/commit/52390d68040637dfc77f9fda6bbe70952423d380 so current Docker runtimes do not suffer from the problem anymore. There are still older version of Docker in use and likely hard to get rid of completely. Address this by wiping out the file completely and effectively get back to pre 4.5 era and CONFIG_MEMCG_KMEM=n configuration. I would recommend backporting to stable trees which have picked up 58056f77502f ("memcg, kmem: further deprecate kmem.limit_in_bytes"). 2023-01-18mm: memcontrol: deprecate charge movingJohannes Weiner
Charge moving mode in cgroup1 allows memory to follow tasks as they migrate between cgroups. This is, and always has been, a questionable thing to do - for several reasons. First, it's expensive. Pages need to be identified, locked and isolated from various MM operations, and reassigned, one by one. Second, it's unreliable. Once pages are charged to a cgroup, there isn't always a clear owner task anymore. Cache isn't moved at all, for example. Mapped memory is moved - but if trylocking or isolating a page fails, it's arbitrarily left behind. Frequent moving between domains may leave a task's memory scattered all over the place. Third, it isn't really needed. Launcher tasks can kick off workload tasks directly in their target cgroup. Using dedicated per-workload groups allows fine-grained policy adjustments - no need to move tasks and their physical pages between control domains. The feature was never forward-ported to cgroup2, and it hasn't been missed. Despite it being a niche usecase, the maintenance overhead of supporting it is enormous. Because pages are moved while they are live and subject to various MM operations, the synchronization rules are complicated. There are lock_page_memcg() in MM and FS code, which non-cgroup people don't understand. In some cases we've been able to shift code and cgroup API calls around such that we can rely on native locking as much as possible. But that's fragile, and sometimes we need to hold MM locks for longer than we otherwise would (pte lock e.g.). Mark the feature deprecated. Hopefully we can remove it soon. And backport into -stable kernels so that people who develop against earlier kernels are warned about this deprecation as early as possible. During the integration of PREEMPT_RT support, the code flow around memcg_check_events() resulted in `twisted code'. Moving the code around and avoiding then would then lead to an additional local-irq-save section within memcg_check_events(). While looking better, it adds a local-irq-save section to code flow which is usually within an local-irq-off block on non-PREEMPT_RT configurations. The threshold event handler is a deprecated memcg v1 feature. Instead of trying to get it to work under PREEMPT_RT just disable it. There should be no users on PREEMPT_RT. From that perspective it makes even less sense to get it to work under PREEMPT_RT while having zero users. Make memory.soft_limit_in_bytes and cgroup.event_control return -EOPNOTSUPP on PREEMPT_RT. Make an empty memcg_check_events() and memcg_write_event_control() which return only -EOPNOTSUPP on PREEMPT_RT. Document that the two knobs are disabled on PREEMPT_RT. 2022-01-15hugetlb: add hugetlb.*.numa_stat fileMina Almasry
For hugetlb backed jobs/VMs it's critical to understand the numa information for the memory backing these jobs to deliver optimal performance. Currently this technically can be queried from /proc/self/numa_maps, but there are significant issues with that. Namely: 1. Memory can be mapped or unmapped. 2. numa_maps are per process and need to be aggregated across all processes in the cgroup. For shared memory this is more involved as the userspace needs to make sure it doesn't double count shared mappings. 3. I believe querying numa_maps needs to hold the mmap_lock which adds to the contention on this lock. For these reasons I propose simply adding hugetlb.*.numa_stat file, which shows the numa information of the cgroup similarly to memory.numa_stat. The deprecation process of kmem.limit_in_bytes started with the commit 0158115f702 ("memcg, kmem: deprecate kmem.limit_in_bytes") which also explains in detail the motivation behind the deprecation. To summarize, it is the unexpected behavior on hitting the kmem limit. This patch moves the deprecation process to the next stage by disallowing to set the kmem limit. In future we might just remove the kmem.limit_in_bytes file completely. Commit bf382fb0bcef4 ("block: remove legacy IO schedulers", Oct 12 2018) removes the CFQ scheduler, together with blkio.weight and blkio.weight_device described in cgroup v1 documentation. Users are supposed to use the BFQ scheduler, which cgroup file for setting weight is blkio.bfq.weight, but there is no way to set per-device weight. Later, commit 795fe54c2a8 per-device weights for BFQ, meaning that blkio.bfq.weight and blkio.bfq.weight_device can be used in a way similar to the old CFQ cgroup interface. Yet, the cgroup v1 docs were never updated. Fix this: - use the new file names; - fix the range for weight (used to be 10..1000, now 1..1000); - link to BFQ scheduler docs.
