2023-11-14drm/format-helper: Pass format-conversion state to helpersThomas Zimmermann
Pass an instance of struct drm_format_conv_state to DRM's format conversion helpers. Update all callers. Most drivers can use the format-conversion state from their shadow- plane state. The shadow plane's destroy function releases the allocated buffer. Drivers will later be able to allocate a buffer of appropriate size in their plane's atomic_check code. The gud driver uses a separate thread for committing updates. For now, the update worker contains its own format-conversion state. Images in the format-helper tests are small. The tests preallocate a static page for the temporary buffer. Unloading the module releases the memory. v6: * update patch for ssd132x support v5: * avoid using unusupported shadow-plane state in repaper (Noralf) * fix documentation (Noralf, kernel test robot) v3: * store buffer in shadow-plane state (Javier, Maxime) * replace ARRAY_SIZE() with sizeof() (Jani) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Tested-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> # ssd130x Cc: Noralf Trønnes <noralf@tronnes.org> Cc: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Cc: Gerd Hoffmann <kraxel@redhat.com> Cc: David Lechner <david@lechnology.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20231009141018.11291-4-tzimmermann@suse.de

2022-12-06drm/gud: Enable synchronous flushing by defaultNoralf Trønnes
gud has a module parameter that controls whether framebuffer flushing happens synchronously during the commit or asynchronously in a worker. GNOME before version 3.38 handled all displays in the same rendering loop. This lead to gud slowing down the refresh rate for a faster monitor. This has now been fixed so lets change the default. The plan is to remove async flushing in the future. The code is now structured in a way that makes it easy to do this. 2022-12-06drm/gud: Don't retry a failed framebuffer flushNoralf Trønnes
If a framebuffer flush fails the driver will do one retry by requeing the worker. Currently the worker is used even for synchronous flushing, but a later patch will inline it, so this needs to change. Thinking about how to solve this I came to the conclusion that this retry mechanism was a fix for a problem that was only in the mind of the developer (me) and not something that solved a real problem. So let's remove this for now and revisit later should it become necessary. gud_add_damage() has now only one caller so it can be inlined. 2022-10-10drm/atomic-helper: Rename drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_reset to avoid ↵Maxime Ripard
ambiguity We currently have two sets of TV properties. The first one is there to deal with analog TV properties, creating properties such as the TV mode, subconnectors, saturation, hue and so on. It's created by calling the drm_mode_create_tv_properties() function. The second one is there to deal with properties that might be useful on a TV, creating the overscan margins for example. It's created by calling the drm_mode_create_tv_margin_properties(). However, we also have a drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_reset() function that will reset the TV margin properties to their default values, and thus is supposed to be called for the latter set. This creates an ambiguity due to the inconsistent naming. We can thus rename the drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_reset() function to drm_atomic_helper_connector_tv_margins_reset() to remove that ambiguity and hopefully make it more obvious. DRM formats are defined to be little-endian, unless the DRM_FORMAT_BIG_ENDIAN flag is set. 2022-02-07dma-buf-map: Rename to iosys-mapLucas De Marchi
Rename struct dma_buf_map to struct iosys_map and corresponding APIs. Over time dma-buf-map grew up to more functionality than the one used by dma-buf: in fact it's just a shim layer to abstract system memory, that can be accessed via regular load and store, from IO memory that needs to be acessed via arch helpers. The idea is to extend this API so it can fulfill other needs, internal to a single driver. Example: in the i915 driver it's desired to share the implementation for integrated graphics, which uses mostly system memory, with discrete graphics, which may need to access IO memory. The conversion was mostly done with the following semantic patch: @r1@ @@ - struct dma_buf_map + struct iosys_map @r2@ @@ ( - DMA_BUF_MAP_INIT_VADDR + IOSYS_MAP_INIT_VADDR | - dma_buf_map_set_vaddr + iosys_map_set_vaddr | - dma_buf_map_set_vaddr_iomem + iosys_map_set_vaddr_iomem | - dma_buf_map_is_equal + iosys_map_is_equal | - dma_buf_map_is_null + iosys_map_is_null | - dma_buf_map_is_set + iosys_map_is_set | - dma_buf_map_clear + iosys_map_clear | - dma_buf_map_memcpy_to + iosys_map_memcpy_to | - dma_buf_map_incr + iosys_map_incr ) @@ @@ - #include <linux/dma-buf-map.h> + #include <linux/iosys-map.h> Then some files had their includes adjusted and some comments were update to remove mentions to dma-buf-map. 2021-08-12drm/shmem-helper: Switch to vmf_insert_pfnDaniel Vetter
We want to stop gup, which isn't the case if we use vmf_insert_page and VM_MIXEDMAP, because that does not set pte_special. The motivation here is to stop get_user_pages from working on buffer object mmaps in general. Quoting some discussion with Thomas: On Thu, Jul 22, 2021 at 08:22:43PM +0200, Thomas Zimmermann wrote: > Am 13.07.21 um 22:51 schrieb Daniel Vetter: > > We want to stop gup, which isn't the case if we use vmf_insert_page > > What is gup? get_user_pages. It pins memory wherever it is, which badly wreaks at least ttm and could also cause trouble with cma allocations. In both cases becaue we can't move/reuse these pages anymore. Now get_user_pages fails when the memory isn't considered "normal", like with VM_PFNMAP and using vm_insert_pfn. For consistency across all dma-buf I'm trying (together with Christian König) to roll this out everywhere, for fewer surprises. E.g. for 5.14 iirc we merged a patch to do the same for ttm, where it closes an actual bug (ttm gets really badly confused when there's suddenly pinned pages where it thought it can move them). cma allcoations already use VM_PFNMAP (because that's what dma_mmap is using underneath), as is anything that's using remap_pfn_range. Worst case we have to revert this patch for shmem helpers if it breaks something, but I hope that's not the case. On the ttm side we've also had some fallout that we needed to paper over with clever tricks. v2: With this shmem gem helpers now definitely need CONFIG_MMU (0day) v3: add more depends on MMU. For usb drivers this is a bit awkward, but really it's correct: To be able to provide a contig mapping of buffers to userspace on !MMU platforms we'd need to use the cma helpers for these drivers on those platforms. As-is this wont work. Also not exactly sure why vm_insert_page doesn't go boom, because that definitely wont fly in practice since the pages are non-contig to begin with. v4: Explain the entire motivation a lot more (Thomas) Acked-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Daniel Vetter <daniel.vetter@intel.com> Cc: Maarten Lankhorst <maarten.lankhorst@linux.intel.com> Cc: Maxime Ripard <mripard@kernel.org> Cc: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Cc: David Airlie <airlied@linux.ie> Cc: Daniel Vetter <daniel@ffwll.ch> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20210812131412.2487363-2-daniel.vetter@ffwll.ch
