The driver was missing support for query_ext_ctrl. Instead of adding a new callback for it, replace the current implementation of queryctrl and let the ioctl framework emulate the old function. A freezable kernel thread can enter frozen state during freezing by either calling try_to_freeze() or using wait_event_freezable() and its variants. Upon module load, a kthread is created targeting the pvr2_context_thread_func function, which may call pvr2_context_destroy and thus call kfree() on the context object. However, that might happen before the usb hub_event handler is able to notify the driver. This patch adds a sanity check before the invalid read reported by syzbot, within the context disconnection call stack. 2023-03-31media: pvrusb2: clean up unneeded complexity in pvrusb2 class logicGreg Kroah-Hartman
The pvrusb2 driver struct class logic was dynamically creating a class that should have just been static as it did not do anything special and was only a wrapper around a stock "struct class" implementation. Clean this all up by making a static struct class and modifying the code to correctly reference it. By doing so, lots of unneeded lines of code were removed, and #ifdef logic was cleaned up so that the .c files are not cluttered up with extra complexity following the proper kernel coding style. 2022-12-25treewide: Convert del_timer*() to timer_shutdown*()Steven Rostedt (Google)
Due to several bugs caused by timers being re-armed after they are shutdown and just before they are freed, a new state of timers was added called "shutdown". After a timer is set to this state, then it can no longer be re-armed. The following script was run to find all the trivial locations where del_timer() or del_timer_sync() is called in the same function that the object holding the timer is freed. It also ignores any locations where the timer->function is modified between the del_timer*() and the free(), as that is not considered a "trivial" case. 2022-06-20media: pvrusb2: fix memory leak in pvr_probeDongliang Mu
The error handling code in pvr2_hdw_create forgets to unregister the v4l2 device. When pvr2_hdw_create returns back to pvr2_context_create, it calls pvr2_context_destroy to destroy context, but mp->hdw is NULL, which leads to that pvr2_hdw_destroy directly returns. Fix this by adding v4l2_device_unregister to decrease the refcount of usb interface. 2022-05-13media: pvrusb2: fix array-index-out-of-bounds in pvr2_i2c_core_initPavel Skripkin
Syzbot reported that -1 is used as array index. The problem was in missing validation check. hdw->unit_number is initialized with -1 and then if init table walk fails this value remains unchanged. Since code blindly uses this member for array indexing adding sanity check is the easiest fix for that. hdw->workpoll initialization moved upper to prevent warning in __flush_work. 2022-03-18media: Kconfig: cleanup VIDEO_DEV dependenciesMauro Carvalho Chehab
media Kconfig has two entries associated to V4L API: VIDEO_DEV and VIDEO_V4L2. On Kernel 2.6.x, there were two V4L APIs, each one with its own flag. VIDEO_DEV were meant to: 1) enable Video4Linux and make its Kconfig options to appear; 2) it makes the Kernel build the V4L core. while VIDEO_V4L2 where used to distinguish between drivers that implement the newer API and drivers that implemented the former one. With time, such meaning changed, specially after the removal of all V4L version 1 drivers. At the current implementation, VIDEO_DEV only does (1): it enables the media options related to V4L, that now has: menu "Video4Linux options" visible if VIDEO_DEV source "drivers/media/v4l2-core/Kconfig" endmenu but it doesn't affect anymore the V4L core drivers. The rationale is that the V4L2 core has a "soft" dependency at the I2C bus, and now requires to select a number of other Kconfig options: config VIDEO_V4L2 tristate depends on (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV select RATIONAL select VIDEOBUF2_V4L2 if VIDEOBUF2_CORE default (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV In the past, merging them would be tricky, but it seems that it is now possible to merge those symbols, in order to simplify V4L dependencies. Let's keep VIDEO_DEV, as this one is used on some make *defconfig configurations. 2021-05-19media: pvrusb2: fix warning in pvr2_i2c_core_doneAnirudh Rayabharam
syzbot has reported the following warning in pvr2_i2c_done: sysfs group 'power' not found for kobject '1-0043' When the device is disconnected (pvr_hdw_disconnect), the i2c adapter is not unregistered along with the USB and v4l2 teardown. As part of the USB device disconnect, the sysfs files of the subdevices are also deleted. So, by the time pvr_i2c_core_done is called by pvr_context_destroy, the sysfs files have been deleted. To fix this, unregister the i2c adapter too in pvr_hdw_disconnect. Make the device deregistration code shared by calling pvr_hdw_disconnect from pvr2_hdw_destroy. Right now, if one has an hybrid TV card, it has to select both analog and digital TV support, as otherwise the needed core support won't be selected. Change the logic to auto-select the core support for those drivers, as this is a way more intuitive. It should be noticed that, as now both DVB_CORE and VIDEO_DEV defaults depends on selecting a hybrid cards, we had to remove the explicit dependencies there, in order to avoid circular dependencies. That requires some tricks: 1) the prompt should not be not visible when an hybrid card is selected, as the user shold not change it. 2) When a media hybrid device is selected, the modular option for DVB_CORE and VIDEO_DEV will follow the MEDIA_SUPPORT dependency, as we can't have a core built with "y" with a driver built as module. 2019-11-09media: pvrusb2: Fix oops on tear-down when radio support is not presentMike Isely
In some device configurations there's no radio or radio support in the driver. That's OK, as the driver sets itself up accordingly. However on tear-down in these caes it's still trying to tear down radio related context when there isn't anything there, leading to dereferences through a null pointer and chaos follows. How this bug survived unfixed for 11 years in the pvrusb2 driver is a mystery to me. On 32-bits archs, a signed integer has 31 bits plus on extra bit for signal. Due to that, touching the 32th bit with something like: int bar = 1 << 31; has an undefined behavior in C on 32 bit architectures, as it touches the signal bit. This is warned by cppcheck. When the pvrusb2 driver detects that there's something wrong with the device, it prints a warning message. Right now those message are printed in two different formats: 1. ***WARNING*** message here 2. WARNING: message here There's an issue with the second format. Syzkaller recognizes it as a message produced by a WARN_ON(), which is used to indicate a bug in the kernel. However pvrusb2 prints those warnings to indicate an issue with the device, not the bug in the kernel. This patch changes the pvrusb2 driver to consistently use the first warning message format. This will unblock syzkaller testing of this driver.
