2025-11-26uio: Add SVA support for PCI devices via uio_pci_generic_sva.cYaxing Guo
This patch introduces a new UIO driver, uio_pci_generic_sva, which extends the functionality of uio_pci_generic by adding support for Shared Virtual Addressing (SVA) when IOMMU is enabled in the system. The key enhancement allows PCI devices to directly use user-space virtual addresses for DMA operations, eliminating the need for bounce buffers or explicit IOVA mapping. This is achieved by leveraging the kernel's IOMMU-SVA subsystem, including process address space attachment, page fault handling, and shared context management between CPU and device. With this driver, userspace applications can perform zero-copy DMA using native pointers: void *addr = malloc(N); set_dma_addr((uint64_t)addr); // Passing user VA directly start_dma(); The device can now access 'addr' through the IOMMU's PASID-based translation, provided that the underlying IOMMU hardware (e.g., Intel VT-d 3.1+, AMD-Vi, ARM SMMU, RISCV IOMMU) and platform support SVA. Dependencies: - CONFIG_IOMMU_SVA must be enabled. - The platform must support PRI (Page Request Interface) and PASID. - Device drivers/userspace must handle page faults if demand-paging is used. The implementation reuses core logic from uio_pci_generic.c while adding PASID setting, and integration with the IOMMU SVA APIs. Also, add a read-only sysfs attribute 'pasid' to expose the Process Address Space ID assigned by IOMMU driver when binding an SVA-enabled device. At present VMBus driver is hinged off of CONFIG_HYPERV which entails lot of builtin code and encompasses too much. It's not always clear what depends on builtin hv code and what depends on VMBus. Setting CONFIG_HYPERV as a module and fudging the Makefile to switch to builtin adds even more confusion. VMBus is an independent module and should have its own config option. Also, there are scenarios like baremetal dom0/root where support is built in with CONFIG_HYPERV but without VMBus. Lastly, there are more features coming down that use CONFIG_HYPERV and add more dependencies on it. So, create a fine grained HYPERV_VMBUS option and update Kconfigs for dependency on VMBus. 2025-09-06uio_hv_generic: Let userspace take care of interrupt maskNaman Jain
Remove the logic to set interrupt mask by default in uio_hv_generic driver as the interrupt mask value is supposed to be controlled completely by the user space. If the mask bit gets changed by the driver, concurrently with user mode operating on the ring, the mask bit may be set when it is supposed to be clear, and the user-mode driver will miss an interrupt which will cause a hang. For eg- when the driver sets inbound ring buffer interrupt mask to 1, the host does not interrupt the guest on the UIO VMBus channel. However, setting the mask does not prevent the host from putting a message in the inbound ring buffer. So let’s assume that happens, the host puts a message into the ring buffer but does not interrupt. Subsequently, the user space code in the guest sets the inbound ring buffer interrupt mask to 0, saying “Hey, I’m ready for interrupts”. User space code then calls pread() to wait for an interrupt. Then one of two things happens: * The host never sends another message. So the pread() waits forever. * The host does send another message. But because there’s already a message in the ring buffer, it doesn’t generate an interrupt. This is the correct behavior, because the host should only send an interrupt when the inbound ring buffer transitions from empty to not-empty. Adding an additional message to a ring buffer that is not empty is not supposed to generate an interrupt on the guest. Since the guest is waiting in pread() and not removing messages from the ring buffer, the pread() waits forever. This could be easily reproduced in hv_fcopy_uio_daemon if we delay setting interrupt mask to 0. Similarly if hv_uio_channel_cb() sets the interrupt_mask to 1, there’s a race condition. Once user space empties the inbound ring buffer, but before user space sets interrupt_mask to 0, the host could put another message in the ring buffer but it wouldn’t interrupt. Then the next pread() would hang. Fix these by removing all instances where interrupt_mask is changed, while keeping the one in set_event() unchanged to enable userspace control the interrupt mask by writing 0/1 to /dev/uioX. 2025-09-06uio: uio_pdrv_genirq: Remove MODULE_DEVICE_TABLEVivian Wang
The struct of_device_id list here is filled in at load time since commit 05c3e0bb5629 ("UIO: allow binding uio_pdrv_genirq.c to devices using command line option"). However, this does not work with MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE, which generates an alias at build time. In this case, it generates the aliases "of:N*T*" and "of:N*T*C*", which matches *any* OF device node, which is obviously not intended. It confuses userspace into loading this module for any OF device, and confuses anyone trying to resolve an OF modalias. Remove this broken MODULE_DEVICE_TABLE. Interrupt and monitor pages should be in Hyper-V page size (4k bytes). This can be different from the system page size. This size is read and used by the user-mode program to determine the mapped data region. An example of such user-mode program is the VMBus driver in DPDK. 2025-05-02uio_hv_generic: Fix sysfs creation path for ring bufferNaman Jain
On regular bootup, devices get registered to VMBus first, so when uio_hv_generic driver for a particular device type is probed, the device is already initialized and added, so sysfs creation in hv_uio_probe() works fine. However, when the device is removed and brought back, the channel gets rescinded and the device again gets registered to VMBus. However this time, the uio_hv_generic driver is already registered to probe for that device and in this case sysfs creation is tried before the device's kobject gets initialized completely. Fix this by moving the core logic of sysfs creation of ring buffer, from uio_hv_generic to HyperV's VMBus driver, where the rest of the sysfs attributes for the channels are defined. While doing that, make use of attribute groups and macros, instead of creating sysfs directly, to ensure better error handling and code flow. Problematic path: vmbus_process_offer (A new offer comes for the VMBus device) vmbus_add_channel_work vmbus_device_register |-> device_register | |... | |-> hv_uio_probe | |... | |-> sysfs_create_bin_file (leads to a warning as | the primary channel's kobject, which is used to | create the sysfs file, is not yet initialized) |-> kset_create_and_add |-> vmbus_add_channel_kobj (initialization of the primary channel's kobject happens later) Above code flow is sequential and the warning is always reproducible in this path. 2025-04-17uio_hv_generic: Set event for all channels on the deviceLong Li
Hyper-V may offer a non latency sensitive device with subchannels without monitor bit enabled. The decision is entirely on the Hyper-V host not configurable within guest. When a device has subchannels, also signal events for the subchannel if its monitor bit is disabled. This patch also removes the memory barrier when monitor bit is enabled as it is not necessary. The memory barrier is only needed between setting up interrupt mask and calling vmbus_set_event() when monitor bit is disabled. 2025-01-10uio_hv_generic: Add a check for HV_NIC for send, receive buffers setupNaman Jain
Receive and send buffer allocation was originally introduced to support DPDK's networking use case. These buffer sizes were further increased to meet DPDK performance requirements. However, these large buffers are unnecessary for any other UIO use cases. Restrict the allocation of receive and send buffers only for HV_NIC device type, saving 47 MB of memory per device. While at it, fix some of the syntax related issues in the touched code which are reported by "--strict" option of checkpatch. 2024-12-01Get rid of 'remove_new' relic from platform driver structLinus Torvalds
The continual trickle of small conversion patches is grating on me, and is really not helping. Just get rid of the 'remove_new' member function, which is just an alias for the plain 'remove', and had a comment to that effect: /* * .remove_new() is a relic from a prototype conversion of .remove(). * New drivers are supposed to implement .remove(). Once all drivers are * converted to not use .remove_new any more, it will be dropped. */ This was just a tree-wide 'sed' script that replaced '.remove_new' with '.remove', with some care taken to turn a subsequent tab into two tabs to make things line up. I did do some minimal manual whitespace adjustment for places that used spaces to line things up. Then I just removed the old (sic) .remove_new member function, and this is the end result. Rescind offer handling relies on rescind callbacks for some of the resources cleanup, if they are registered. It does not unregister vmbus device for the primary channel closure, when callback is registered. Without it, next onoffer does not come, rescind flag remains set and device goes to unusable state. Add logic to unregister vmbus for the primary channel in rescind callback to ensure channel removal and relid release, and to ensure that next onoffer can be received and handled properly. 2024-04-11uio_hv_generic: Enable interrupt for low speed VMBus devicesSaurabh Sengar
Hyper-V is adding some "specialty" synthetic devices. Instead of writing new kernel-level VMBus drivers for these devices, the devices will be presented to user space via this existing Hyper-V generic UIO driver, so that a user space driver can handle the device. Since these new synthetic devices are low speed devices, they don't support monitor bits and we must use vmbus_setevent() to enable interrupts from the host. 2024-04-11uio: pruss: Remove this driverAndrew Davis
This UIO driver was used to control the PRU processors found on various TI SoCs. It was created before the Remoteproc framework, but now with that we have a standard way to program and manage the PRU processors. The proper PRU Remoteproc driver should be used instead of this driver. This driver only supported the original class of PRUSS (OMAP-L1xx / AM17xx / AM18xx / TMS320C674x / DA8xx) but when these platforms were switched to use Device Tree the support for DT was not added to this driver and so it is now unused/unusable. Support for these platforms can be added to the proper PRU Remoteproc driver if ever needed. Remove this driver. The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new(), which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() will be renamed to .remove(). Trivially convert this driver from always returning zero in the remove callback to the void returning variant. 2024-04-10uio_hv_generic: Don't free decrypted memoryRick Edgecombe
In CoCo VMs it is possible for the untrusted host to cause set_memory_encrypted() or set_memory_decrypted() to fail such that an error is returned and the resulting memory is shared. Callers need to take care to handle these errors to avoid returning decrypted (shared) memory to the page allocator, which could lead to functional or security issues. The VMBus device UIO driver could free decrypted/shared pages if set_memory_decrypted() fails. Check the decrypted field in the gpadl to decide whether to free the memory. 2024-03-27Fix build errors due to new UIO_MEM_DMA_COHERENT messLinus Torvalds
Commit 576882ef5e7f ("uio: introduce UIO_MEM_DMA_COHERENT type") introduced a new use-case for 'struct uio_mem' where the 'mem' field now contains a kernel virtual address when 'memtype' is set to UIO_MEM_DMA_COHERENT. That in turn causes build errors, because 'mem' is of type 'phys_addr_t', and a virtual address is a pointer type. When the code just blindly uses cast to mix the two, it caused problems when phys_addr_t isn't the same size as a pointer - notably on 32-bit architectures with PHYS_ADDR_T_64BIT. The proper thing to do would probably be to use a union member, and not have any casts, and make the 'mem' member be a union of 'mem.physaddr' and 'mem.vaddr', based on 'memtype'. This is not that proper thing. This is just fixing the ugly casts to be even uglier, but at least not cause build errors on 32-bit platforms with 64-bit physical addresses.
