2025-02-20cpupower: monitor: Exit with error status if execvp() failYiwei Lin
In the case that we give a invalid command to idle_monitor for monitoring, the execvp() will fail and thus go to the next line. As a result, we'll see two differnt monitoring output. For example, running `cpupower monitor -i 5 invalidcmd` which `invalidcmd` is not executable. 2024-12-09cpupower: revise is_valid flag handling for idle_monitorwangfushuai
The is_valid flag should reflect the validity state of both the XXX_start and XXX_stop functions. But the use of '=' in XXX_stop overwrites the validity state set by XXX_start. This commit changes '=' to '|=' in XXX_stop to preserve and combine the validity state of XXX_start and XXX_stop. 2024-06-20cpupower: Change the var type of the 'monitor' subcommand display modeRoman Storozhenko
There is a type 'enum operation_mode_e' contains the display modes of the 'monitor' subcommand. This type isn't used though, instead the variable 'mode' is of a simple 'int' type. Change 'mode' variable type from 'int' to 'enum operation_mode_e' in order to improve compiler type checking. Built and tested this with different monitor cmdline params. 2023-05-08cpupower: Make TSC read per CPU for Mperf monitorWyes Karny
System-wide TSC read could cause a drift in C0 percentage calculation. Because if first TSC is read and then one by one mperf is read for all cpus, this introduces drift between mperf reading of later CPUs and TSC reading. To lower this drift read TSC per CPU and also just after mperf read. This technique improves C0 percentage calculation in Mperf monitor. Not sure this is possible at all with the current data exposed from the kernel. 2019-11-05cpupower: mperf_monitor: Update cpupower to use the RDPRU instructionJanakarajan Natarajan
AMD Zen 2 introduces the RDPRU instruction which can be used to access some processor registers which are typically only accessible in privilege level 0. ECX specifies the register to read and EDX:EAX will contain the value read. ECX: 0 - Register MPERF 1 - Register APERF This has the added advantage of not having to use the msr module, since the userspace to kernel transitions which occur during each read_msr() might cause APERF and MPERF to go out of sync. 2019-11-05cpupower: mperf_monitor: Introduce per_cpu_schedule flagJanakarajan Natarajan
The per_cpu_schedule flag is used to move the cpupower process to the cpu on which we are looking to read the APERF/MPERF registers. This prevents IPIs from being generated by read_msr()s as we are already on the cpu of interest. Ex: If cpupower is running on CPU 0 and we execute read_msr(20, MSR_APERF, val) then, read_msr(20, MSR_MPERF, val) the msr module will generate an IPI from CPU 0 to CPU 20 to query for the MSR_APERF and then the MSR_MPERF in separate IPIs. This delay, caused by IPI latency, between reading the APERF and MPERF registers may cause both of them to go out of sync. The use of the per_cpu_schedule flag reduces the probability of this from happening. It comes at the cost of a negligible increase in cpu consumption caused by the migration of cpupower across each of the cpus of the system. 2017-11-15cpupower : Fix cpupower working when cpu0 is offlineAbhishek Goel
cpuidle_monitor used to assume that cpu0 is always online which is not a valid assumption on POWER machines. This patch fixes this by getting the cpu on which the current thread is running, instead of always using cpu0 for monitoring which may not be online. 2016-04-28cpupower: Add cpuidle parts into libraryThomas Renninger
This more or less is a renaming and moving of functions and should not introduce any functional change. cpupower was built from cpufrequtils (which had a C library providing easy access to cpu frequency platform info). In the meantime it got enhanced by quite some neat cpuidle userspace tools. Now the cpu idle functions have been separated and added to the cpupower.so library. This fix hides offlined cores where topology cannot be accessed. With a recent kernel patch suggested from Prarit Bhargava it may be possible that soft offlined cores' topology can still be parsed. This patch would then show which cores in which package/socket are offline, when sane toplogoy information is available. 2015-05-30cpupower: mperf monitor: fix output in MAX_FREQ_SYSFS modeHerton R. Krzesinski
There is clearly wrong output when mperf monitor runs in MAX_FREQ_SYSFS mode: average frequency shows in kHz unit (despite the intended output to be in MHz), and percentages for C state information are all wrong (including high/negative values shown). The problem is that the max_frequency read on initialization isn't used where it should have been used on mperf_get_count_percent (to estimate the number of ticks in the given time period), and the value we read from sysfs is in kHz, so we must divide it to get the MHz value to use in current calculations. While at it, also I fixed another small issues in the debug output of max_frequency value in mperf_get_count_freq. Signed-off-by: Herton R. Assuming that CPU specific configuration PCI devices are always on domain and bus zero a pci_slot_func_init() func which gets the slot and func of the desired PCI device passed looks like the most convenient way. This also obsoletes the PCI device id maintenance. CPU power consumption vs performance tuning is no longer limited to CPU frequency switching anymore: deep sleep states, traditional dynamic frequency scaling and hidden turbo/boost frequencies are tied close together and depend on each other. The first two exist on different architectures like PPC, Itanium and ARM, the latter (so far) only on X86. On X86 the APU (CPU+GPU) will only run most efficiently if CPU and GPU has proper power management in place. Users and Developers want to have *one* tool to get an overview what their system supports and to monitor and debug CPU power management in detail. The tool should compile and work on as many architectures as possible.
